Reaction between sodium and water


Sodium is a light metal, it has a melting point about 96 degree. The symbol of sodium atom is “Na” and the atomic number is equal to 11, it is an alkali metal. Metallic sodium is a highly reactive element with numerous uses in chemistry. It is a very shiny metal which reacts very quickly with air and forms a layer of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate and also it reacts with water. If a small amount of sodium is dropped into water, it reacts almost explosively, a lot of hydrogen gas is generated and the heat from the reaction burn all the formed hydrogen and a sodium flame appears, Sodium Hydroxide is also a product of reaction. For organic chemists, sodium is most commonly used as a drying agent for solvents or as a reducer.

Sodium + Water –> Hydrogen + Sodium Hydroxide

2 Na (s) + 2 H2O (L) –> 2 NaOH (aq) + H2

Is sodium dangerous for the health ?

Many of our food contain sodium, it is the main element forming the salt (sodium hydroxide). This is a list of different food that contain sodium:

  • Breads
  • Chicken
  • Burritos and tacos
  • Cheese
  • Eggs

But eating to much sodium can be bad for the health. First, the kidneys help to control the blood pressure by taking water out of the blood stream. But too much sodium in the blood pulls the water back in, so more salt means more water in your blood vessels and that means higher pressure over time which contributes to the most of the heart attacks.

Adults and children over eleven shouldn’t eat more than 6g of salt a day which is equal to a teaspoon of salt. Too much salt is hidden in ready made food, even they do not taste salty.

So, Reducing sodium intake can help lower the blood pressure and improve the health of the heart.
